Kum & Go Adopts a DIBS for Kids School

May 2, 2019

OMAHA, NE – DIBS for Kids, an Omaha-based literacy nonprofit, recently received a grant from Kum & Go. The $7,500 grant will support DIBS to expand its take-home book program to one of Omaha’s high-poverty public elementary schools during the fall of 2019.

Three of every five students growing up in poverty don’t have a single age-appropriate book in their homes. DIBS for Kids believes all students regardless of family income should have access to a great book to read every night. Through this grant, Kum & Go is helping DIBS to change childhood literacy in Omaha. “We are super thankful for the funding that Kum & Go has provided us over the past two years. Last year their dollars allowed us to expand to Castelar Elementary, a dual language DIBS school, and this year their gift will be going to our 11th Omaha school,” said Marie Kovar, School Support Director for DIBS for Kids. “Kum & Go’s generosity is one reason we are able to provide high quality books to over 2,000 students in Omaha, giving each student the chance to take home about 80 more very cool books to read each year. Now that’s a lot of books!”

Businesses can directly support local high-poverty elementary schools through the DIBS for Kids Adopt-a-School initiative.

Since 2018, Kum & Go has donated $22,000 to support DIBS’ mission to put books into the hands of children who need them. A second Kum & Go sponsored school will receive the DIBS for Kids program in 2019, bringing another 250 students into the Kum & Go DIBS family and lasting impacts to youth education in the Omaha area.

About DIBS for Kids

Delivering Infinite Book Shelves (DIBS) for Kids is a technology-based literacy nonprofit that helps teachers address the fact that too many kids leave school every day without a book to read at home. DIBS supports schools to address this problem in two ways: (1) helping to fundraise for little classroom-based libraries filled with leveled take-home books, and (2) developing a QR-code based inventory technology that is fun for students and easy for teachers. Since 2011, DIBS has sent home over 350,000 books within ten of Omaha’s highest-poverty schools. DIBS is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska with school pilots in Kansas City, MO and Kentwood, MI.
